Duncan Asper

My art is the distillation of 3 decades in the creative side of the advertising industry as a freelance artist, art director, graphic and web designer. I’ve worked with a vast array of people, media and image building challenges. These experiences and challenges define my approach to my art.

Media is fuel for my design experiments on canvas with brushes, pallet knife modeling, acrylics, oils, polymers and metals. I also design and construct the framework of solid hard woods and metal accents.

As far back as I can remember I liked drawing and painting Creativity has always been important to me and I enjoy working with my hands.

The thrust of each painting is to represent nature's most ancient and basic elements, and of humanity's interaction with the world we live in using those elements.

The work represents 4 ancient and primary building materials, stone, wood, metal and glass.

Stone, the earliest and longest lasting is designed to provide support and integrity to the painting. The texture and antiquing is achieved with a pallet knife and modeling medium. Acrylic and semitransparent oil paints create the bold colors, bringing out the antique texture surronding the primary design element.

Wood, a beautiful, strong and natural material, it offers classic integrity, visually enhancing everything. I use exotic, solid hardwoods for the framework, designed to make it a part of the painting, an excellent final touch. Most of the physical weight of the painting comes from the solid wood that I use.

Metal, strength and flexibility on land, sea, air and in space. My rivet patterns impart structural steel, found everywhere and used in just about everything. Each rivet pattern is done slowly, one at a time. I use Acrylic for a base color and oil paint for the final color. The brass, aluminum and copper framework fasterners add a bit of bling to the viewing experience. At times gold, silver and copper leafing is applied to the raised surface on the canvas as an accent.

Glass, magnificent at not being seen, interacts with light like nothing else, allowing the brightness of day and the brilliance of color to explode, this is the primary design element of each of my paintings. My many years of graphic design are employed in this primary element of my art. Once I have the concept and rough design sketched out it is the first thing drawn on the canvas, from which all else is built around. A pallet knife and brush is used to apply the flexible silicon medium in multiple layers, slowly building up the depth for a rich and vibrant color.

Freelance Artist, Art Director, Graphic & Web Designer

Throughout my formal education I majored in fine art and commercial art. A native of So. California since 1955 I was raised in Pasadena. I moved to La Jolla in 1969 where I owned and operated an art and gift store. It was during those years that I traveled the world. I moved to Hawaii in 1979 and lived there through the 80’s, until I returned to California in 1991.

While in Hawaii, I released a series of original acrylic paintings on canvas and hand pulled, limited edition serigraphs. These images were exhibited in several one man shows in Honolulu including the Black Orchid the Honolulu Club, The Framery Art Gallery and other venues.

In 1992 I attended Platt College in Orange County, and received a degree in computer graphics and web design in 2000. I have worked in all phases of the commercial creative process, developing advertising and marketing tools for in-house marketing departments, design studios, individual clients and advertising agencies in Hawaii and California.

In 2002 I attended Mission Renaissance Fine Art Academy where I studied sketching, composition, color theory, and different techniques of representational painting with oils on canvas.

My commercial experience includes design and production of logos, brochures, multi page ads, web sites, newsletters, signage, identity packages, and catalogs. My computer of choice is Macintosh.
