Thoughts on Graphic Design And Advertising

I always thought of graphic design as disposable art. Some advertising is elegant and entertaining while most is just plane insulting and poorly done . . . . in business a necessary evil. Having spent over 40 years in the industry it was my day job and I enjoyed the creative challenge as well as learning about what makes people respond to design, color and message. I spent some time, on and off, in Corporate America in design studios, ad agencies and in house marketing departments, but most of my career was as a freelance designer and art director. I enjoyed working with printers, photographers, camera houses, copywriters and publications and these days the internet. Attention to detail, unreasonable clients and short time frames can make it a high stress pressure cooker.

To Be A Fine Artist

There have been many books written on the facets of being an artist. Creative expression is inherent in all but expressed by few. Weather you are a painter, musician, sculpture or writer the challenge to me is the same. “To create original art and fashion your own style.” Some are more gifted than others but it all takes effort. 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Dedication to your art should come before thoughts of financial rewards. Competition and shear volume of creative products today can be overwhelming and disheartening making it even more important that you love what you do, regardless.

Songwriting and Playing Guitar

I started playing guitar as a teenager and was always drawn to music. Being a child of the 60’s, rock and roll was a constant companion. Having the ability to create music has so many rewards, one of which is jamming with other musicians. While many prefer to learn popular songs I took the position that writing, performing and recording my original songs was where I wanted to invest my time. I never viewed music as a career pursuit but see it as food for the soul.

I am making available to anyone that wants to download and use my music for live performances or personal performances. Covering my material or songs isn't so much of a problem when performing live, but if you want to record and distribute a song as a record or a download, you're going to need permission from me.
